Yang Style Tai Chi Program

The TIAN YI Foundation Yang Style Tai Chi Program is built upon authentic Yang Style Tai Chi traditions and is designed to make the benefits of this historic internal art accessible to modern practitioners. Our program combines traditional principles with a structured wellness-based approach focused on balance, mobility, coordination, relaxation, posture, and healthy aging.

The curriculum introduces students to the fundamental principles of Yang Style Tai Chi through foundational exercises, movement training, posture development, breathing coordination, and the Yang Style Eight-Step Form. Participants progress at their own pace through a year-long program designed to build confidence, body awareness, and functional movement skills that support lifelong wellness.

The program is guided by instructors who have studied under recognized teachers within established Yang Style lineages. While our primary focus is wellness education rather than lineage promotion, we believe that preserving authentic teachings helps ensure that students receive instruction grounded in the principles that have made Yang Style Tai Chi one of the world's most respected movement systems.

Through consistent practice, students develop improved balance, mobility, flexibility, coordination, and movement confidence. Whether participating for fall prevention, stress reduction, healthy aging, rehabilitation support, or personal enrichment, students are introduced to a time-tested system that has benefited generations of practitioners around the world.

For those wishing to continue their studies beyond the introductory curriculum, additional opportunities for ongoing training and deeper exploration of Yang Style Tai Chi may be available through future programs and advanced instruction.

Our goal is simple: to preserve the integrity of traditional Yang Style Tai Chi while making its benefits accessible to veterans, seniors, families, and communities seeking lifelong wellness through movement.

These videos are provided for educational and inspirational purposes, showcasing experienced Tai-Chi/Taiji practitioners and senior internal arts masters demonstrating movement, balance, coordination, and mobility later in life. Many of these individuals have trained for decades and serve as examples of how consistent practice can support healthy aging, functional movement, posture, flexibility, and overall wellness. By sharing these demonstrations, we hope to show seniors, veterans, and individuals of all experience levels that age does not have to be a barrier to movement. While every person's abilities and health conditions are different, these examples illustrate the long-term benefits that mindful movement practices such as Bagua Zhang, Tai Chi Chuan, Xing Yi Quan, and Qigong may provide when practiced safely and consistently. The purpose of these videos is not comparison, but inspiration—to encourage lifelong learning, continued mobility, increased confidence, and an active approach to health and wellness at every stage of life.

Video Library Purpose

Yang Chengfu (楊澄甫, 1883–1936) is widely recognized as one of the most influential figures in the history of Tai Chi Chuan. As the grandson of Yang Luchan (楊露禪), founder of Yang Family Tai Chi, and the son of Yang Jianhou (楊健侯), Yang Chengfu inherited a rich martial tradition and helped bring Tai Chi from a private family art to the general public.

During the early twentieth century, Yang Chengfu traveled extensively throughout China teaching Tai Chi and introducing its health, wellness, and martial benefits to thousands of students. Through his efforts, Tai Chi became accessible to people from all walks of life rather than remaining limited to a small number of disciples.

Yang Chengfu is best known for standardizing and preserving the large-frame Yang Family Tai Chi form, emphasizing relaxation, balance, coordination, proper body alignment, and smooth continuous movement. His teachings helped establish the foundation from which many modern Tai Chi programs and Yang-style variations developed.

Because of his tremendous contribution to the preservation and worldwide growth of Tai Chi Chuan, Yang Chengfu remains one of the most respected and recognized masters in the art's history. His influence continues to be felt today in community wellness programs, health-oriented Tai Chi classes, traditional martial arts schools, and competitive Tai Chi organizations around the world.

The TIAN YI Foundation honors Yang Chengfu's legacy because his work helped make Tai Chi accessible to ordinary people seeking better health, improved mobility, greater balance, and lifelong wellness—the same goals that guide our community programs today.

Harvard Medical School Research on Tai Chi & Healthy Aging

Current research from Harvard Medical School continues to demonstrate the benefits of mindful movement for balance, mobility, fall prevention, and healthy aging. While Bagua Zhang has been studied less extensively, it shares many of the same principles and places an even greater emphasis on footwork, directional changes, turning mechanics, weight shifting, and dynamic balance training.

Because many falls occur while walking, turning, or transitioning between movements, Bagua Zhang's circle walking methods provide a unique approach to developing stability, coordination, body awareness, and movement confidence. These traditional training methods may help support functional mobility and fall-prevention efforts for older adults, veterans, and active-aging populations.

We invite you to explore this Harvard Medical School article to learn more about the growing body of research supporting the health and wellness benefits of internal movement arts and their role in promoting lifelong mobility and independence.
